Hauora Hinengaro Karakia, tākina…

This karakia can be used for most occasions and ceremonies. It is a hybrid of ancient tradition with the inclusion of two health concepts, the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and Te Whare Tapa Whā. The karakia was written by the Māori Development Specialist to incorporate a Māori World View on the 5 Ways to Wellbeing in the form of a karakia (prayer).

During this time was the Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) which incorporated Sir Mason Durie’s Hauora Model, Te Whare Tapa Wha hence it’s inclusion also in this karakia. This karakia is a perfect reminder to be conscious about self-care, to embrace positive energy from natural sources and dispel negativity. The word mahara (primordial energy) derives from the Māori conception of the creation providing a rich depth of ancient tradition and custom.

Manawa mai te mauri nuku
manawa mai te mauri rangi
kia mahara ki te whakaaro
kia mahara ki te aroha
kia mātau
kia pakari
kia aroha tētahi ki tētahi
Hei oranga wairua
Hei oranga hinengaro
Hei oranga tinana
Hei oranga whānau
kia mauri tū, kia mauri ora
Haumi e, hui e, taiki e

Embrace the life force of the earth
Embrace the life force of the sky
Reflect on the primordial energy of thought (TAKE NOTICE)
Reflect on the primordial energy of compassion (GIVE)
To grow in knowledge (KEEP LEARNING)
To build character (BE ACTIVE)
To have compassion for one another (CONNECT)
For the wellbeing of the spirit (Te Whare Tapa Whā)
And those we hold dearest
For the purpose of good health and wellbeing
Unified, connected and blessed
