The team from Mapu Maia, Gerhart Berking, Ben Langi, Phillip Siataga and Feleti Piva recently joined Radio 531pi Pacific breakfast show with Radio host Brian Sagala to discuss and raise awareness on problem gambling.
The team members who all work in different regions around New Zealand; Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch united recently to speak about the who they are and the work they do.
A special mention has to go to Philip Siataga who does not call himself a counsellor now, even though that’s what he is professionally, he instead refers to himself as a ‘Hopester’ when working with individuals and families. He explains his role as building, picking people up, lifting them with dignity and mana and putting plans in place that helps them rebuild their lives. Okay, this is going to sound like a line from the movie Jerry Maguire, but Phillip “you had me at Hopester”. Without even mentioning problem gambling in your introduction you grabbed my interest and broke down so many barriers that just makes a person feel okay to come to talk to you.
This dynamic team of Pacific men share their pearls of wisdom of working within their diverse Pacific cultures. Just to name a few; helping affected others that struggle and wait for the catalyst of change, addressing the secrecy and bringing it out, and how budgeting is not practiced and should be.
